Orthotics Q & A

What are orthotics?

Orthotics, also known as orthoses, are devices worn inside of shoes to correct problems with the feet or ankles. Orthotic devices range from simple shoe inserts you can find in a store to specialized prescription devices to custom-made braces, footpads, and inserts.

Why do I need orthotics?

Orthotics are used to align the feet and ankles and maintain balance while you walk, run, and stand. Orthotics are helpful for many different conditions. They distribute weight away from a painful area and, in some cases, correct muscular imbalances that are the root cause of pain.

Conditions orthotics help include:

  • Arch, heel, or ankle pain
  • Flat feet
  • Foot or ankle malformation
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Corns and calluses
  • Arthritis or geriatric foot issues
  • Diabetic foot issues
  • Neuroma
  • Bunions

Over-the-counter orthotics can only help very mild foot problems. For moderate to severe issues, prescription orthotics are needed to reach optimal foot health and comfort.

How long will I need to wear orthotics?

Whether your orthotics are temporary or a long-term solution depends on your condition. In the case of injury and some imbalances, you may only need your orthotics for a few months.

The majority of orthotics, however, are recommended for ongoing use. Generally, orthotics can correct your condition while you wear them, but they can’t heal your condition on their own.

What are the different kinds of orthotics?

There are many kinds of orthotics, but most fall into one of these three categories:

Footpads cushion an area of the foot to limit pressure and friction from causing pain or injury. Prescription-quality pads are designed to fit specific areas perfectly, so they’re usually more effective than over-the-counter pads.

Shoe inserts

As the name suggests, these fit inside of your shoes to cradle your foot and redistribute your weight. Inserts can be soft or firm, with support at specific points to keep the foot in its optimal position. Custom inserts are molded to conform to your foot for maximum stabilization.

Braces support and align the joints, most commonly the ankle. Most braces can be opened to insert your foot, then tighten snuggly for maximum support. You can usually wear your shoe over your orthotic ankle brace.
